God’s Anger

God’s Anger

Bible: Psalm 30:1-12

Reading

His anger lasts only a moment, but his favour lasts a lifetime (V.5).

When Liz was thirteen, she was arrested, handcuffed and taken to jail for shoplifting. She was terrified when she realised she had to phone her parents. She explained to her dad and mum what had happened and then said brokenly, “I’m sorry.” “Sorry isn’t enough,” her mum replied. “I’m
disappointed in you.” After what seemed like forever, her parents arrived to take her home. Feeling awful about the pain she had caused them, Liz braced herself for angry words and punishment. She got neither. Her dad said, “I’m not going to punish you. What you did was wrong, but I think you’ve been punished enough already.” When God becomes angry with us for our sin, we deserve it and any penalty is always fair. But the Bible tells us, “His anger lasts only a moment” (PSALM 30:5). When we turn back to Him, He forgives us and doesn’t bring it up against us ever again (JEREMIAH 31:34; 1 JOHN 1:9). What about you? Have you been afraid to talk to your heavenly Father and admit to Him where you’ve messed up? Or do you think He’s angry with you even though you’ve asked for His forgiveness? Read Psalm 30:1-5 again and take it all in. God’s anger doesn’t last, but His love does.

GOD’S HATRED OF SIN DOES NOT CHANGE
HIS LOVE FOR US.
