Eternal eyes

Eternal eyes

Bible: 2 Corinthians 4:7-18

Reading

We fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen (V.18).

Eternal eyes. That’s what my friend prays her family, friends and church would have. She wants them to be less and less short-sighted—only looking at the things around them—and more and more long-sighted, having their focus on following God and being excited about heaven Paul and his team suffered a lot from people who hated their message about Jesus. And they even suffered from Christians who didn’t like them. But even though they were attacked and hated, they had eternal eyes. Paul told the church in Corinth that “we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal” (2 CORINTHIANS 4:18).
Although they were doing God’s work, they lived each day “hard pressed on every side”, “perplexed”, “persecuted” and “struck down” (VV.8-9). Shouldn’t God have rescued them from these things? But instead of being disappointed and frustrated, Paul built his confidence on the “eternal glory” to come that will be far better than today’s “momentary troubles” (V.17). Even in hard times, he knew God’s power was at work in him. He was totally confident that “the one who raised the Lord Jesus from the dead will also raise us with Jesus” (V.14). When we feel shaky, and when things are going wrong, let’s turn our eyes to God. He is our fortress, the unmoving, unchanging, unending Rock that will never be broken.
