HELP!
Bible: Psalm 46
Reading
God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble (V.1).
People are supposed to call 999 for emergencies only. It seems like there’s a few people who haven’t quite understood . . . Like the guy who called the Greater Manchester Police to complain that he had been waiting for a pizza delivery for forty-five minutes! I read another crazy real-life 999 conversation online:
Call Handler: “Do you need fire, police or ambulance?” Caller: “Mountain Rescue please.”
Call Handler: “Where are you?”
Caller: “I’m on the top bunk and I can’t get down.”
I have often wondered if some of our prayers for help sound as daft as this to God. But there’s one thing we can be sure of: in times of need God not only hears what we say, He is also right here with us. Psalm 46 talks about times of disaster, including war. Yet it is a song of trust that begins and ends with the same certainty: “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble . . . The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress” (PSALM 46:1,11). God is always at work—even when the world seems to be falling apart. He tells us, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth” (V.10). We don’t have to be afraid. When we call for help, we know that He hears and will get us through everything.
