You and your stuff

You and your stuff

Bible: Matthew 19:16-26

Reading

It is hard for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of heaven (V.23).

Six armed gunmen broke into a London bank and stole valuables worth more than £5 million. One woman, whose jewellery was worth £500,000, cried, “Everything I had was in there. My whole life was in that bank.” Some people really do value their lives by what they own. I’ve heard stories of people who have died rushing into their burning houses to rescue jewellery, gadgets or souvenirs that they just couldn’t live without. We all have things that we’re attached to—smartphones are a biggie! But any of our stuff might be really important to us. The problem is not that we have things we love; but if they become more important than God. If we find we’re living for things, like getting a new smartphone or becoming really rich one day, then we are not living for Jesus. The story in the Bible of the rich young ruler should make us sit up and take note. Jesus told that guy: “You cannot serve both God and money” (MATTHEW 6:24). If you have loads or not, make sure you keep a healthy distance between you and your stuff. Stuff is great, but it’s not God. God gives us life, but stuff just drags us down and takes over everything the more we focus on it.
