Blame Game
Bible: Genesis 3:1-13
Reading
The man said, “The woman you put here with me—she gave me some fruit
from the tree, and I ate it” (V.12).
It’s easy to blame other people to cover our mistakes. “I wouldn’t have gone there if so-and-so hadn’t told me about it . . .” Blaming others has been around since the very first people messed up. When Adam and Eve ate from the tree which God had told them to leave alone, their eyes were opened and they lost their innocence. God asked the man a simple, yet sharp question: “Where are you?” (GENESIS 3:9). Adam had walked closely with God, but now he was scared and hid himself. God’s follow-up question was more challenging than the first: “Have you eaten from the tree from which I commanded you not to eat?” (V.11). Then the blame game started: “The woman you put here with me—she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it” (V.12). Adam blamed God and the woman for his sin. Then Eve blamed the serpent rather than herself. Ever since that day in the Garden of Eden, we have all had an instinct to blame others rather than ourselves for our selfish choices. When we mess up, we should own up. Let’s pray like David: “I acknowledged my sin to you and did not cover up my iniquity” (PSALM 32:5).
THE FIRST STEP IN SAYING SORRY
IS TO ADMIT THAT YOU DID SOMETHING WRONG.
