Bible: Judges 2:7-19

Reading

Then the Lord raised up judges, who saved them (V.16).

The book of Judges is the story of God’s people slowly becoming disinterested in God and more rebellious towards His ways. After the death of Joshua, their leader, the people “forsook the Lord, the God of their ancestors, who had brought them out of Egypt. They followed and worshipped various gods of the peoples around them” (JUDGES 2:12). The book as a whole is pretty hard going. There are a lot of nasty people, bad decisions and bloody mistakes. Yet even in this terrible time in
Israel’s history, four people stand out and are even named in the New Testament (HEBREWS 11:32): Gideon, Barak, Samson and Jephthah. Along with Noah, Abraham, Moses and other key Bible characters, they are held up as good examples of faith and trust in God. In the stories themselves, it’s clear these men had problems. None of them were perfect. But they still turned to God during difficult times when the world around them seemed to have forgotten Him completely. The Bible remembers their names not for their perfection or what they did, but because they chose to turn to God even in the mess. They accepted God’s grace and forgiveness, just as we need to. God is still looking to use people who are true to Him and to the Bible. What makes the difference is not how perfect we are, but that we choose Him and His ways, and even turn to Him when life is hard. If we’re willing to do this, we too are unlikely heroes.
