Living Forever

Living Forever

Bible: 2 Corinthians 5:1-8

We groan, longing to be clothed instead with our heavenly dwelling (V.2)

Quite a few multimillionaires have left money to themselves in the hope of being brought back to life. They have arranged to be cryogenically frozen after death. They’ve also put their money in ‘personal revival trusts’, which they believe will be waiting for them when scientists manage to bring them back to life in the future. It’s a far-fetched plan to say the least. Even if people can be brought back to life in the future, it’s only to come back to a life that is uncertain, dangerous and sure to end again at some point. Paul explains that God is the only one who can give never-ending life (1 TIMOTHY 6:16). He is the only one who is forever. For us, however, death is unavoidable. It is the only certain part of life. And it leads to judgement (HEBREWS 9:27). This is all a result of our selfishness and rejection of God, but it can be undone by trusting the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ (JOHN 3:15-16). Through His new life, Jesus beat the power of death for good and showed us the way to life forever: with Him (2 TIMOTHY 1:10). Our reaction to the reality of death shouldn’t be to try and live as long as we can, and fit in as much as possible. We need to be ready for death (even if it’s decades away) by knowing Jesus, the one who beat it for us and gives us new life that really will last forever.
