More than information

Bible: Luke 24:13-32

Reading

Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road
and opened the Scriptures to us? (V.32).

In Acts 17, Paul went to Athens to share the truth that Jesus had come back to life. Many listened who had never heard of Jesus, but just liked talking about clever ideas and theories. Luke, who wrote the book of Acts, says they spent their days just talking. But they never changed their lives because of it. The things they learned or thought about never made a difference to them (ACTS 17:21). Too much information can be dangerous. All the ideas can blur together and become confused, leaving us unchanged by what we know. Centuries ago, the historian Plutarch said we shouldn’t live on an informational level—our lives are much more than just what we know. He
said, “The mind is not a [bowl] to be filled, but a fire to be [sparked].” The Christians on the road to Emmaus would have agreed (LUKE 24). They walked sadly, grieving Jesus’ death. But Jesus, back from the dead, joined them on the road and walked with them (even though they didn’t recognise Him). He began teaching them from the Old Testament about the promises He had made true. Later that day, Jesus finally revealed Himself to them and then vanished. After Jesus left, they were amazed at what they had heard and seen. The things He taught were not boring facts but a fire that burned inside them with love for Him. May we also trust Jesus to start a fire in our lives as we grow in love for Him.
