Space Rubbish

Space Rubbish

Bible: 2 Samuel 12:1-13

Reading

Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows
(GALATIANS 6:7).

Orbiting our planet at speeds of more than 4.5 miles per second is a growing lump of space rubbish. Nuts, bolts and other bits and pieces from space flights are a real hazard to astronauts and spacecraft heading into space. The speed of this space rubbish gives even the tiniest screw the power and punch of a speeding bullet. During one shuttle mission, a speck of paint zoomed into the spacecraft, making a small (but very dangerous) hole in the window! We think there are 110,000 objects larger than 1 centimetre in orbit. Their combined weight is nearly 2,000,000 kilos! To avoid a crash, NASA has to track this pile of space rubbish all the time. Selfish choices create their own kind of rubbish—painful consequences and results. When Achan stole and hid treasure he’d been told not to touch, it cost him his life (JOSHUA 7). After King David slept with another man’s wife and then murdered the man, his family life was ruined forever (2 SAMUEL 15-18). Do you have any ‘rubbish’ in your life? Sin’s consequences have a way of building up. When we admit the things we’ve done to God, He promises to forgive and clean us (1 JOHN 1:9). For those we have hurt, we can say sorry and look to change how we act around them (LUKE 19:1-8). The God of love will help us to deal with bad decisions from our past and make good ones in the future.
