The Truth about Sin
Bible: 1 Kings 15:1-5,11
Reading
David had done what was right in the eyes of the Lord and had not failed to
keep any of the Lord’s commands all the days of his life—except in the case
of Uriah the Hittite (V.5).
Writing honestly is hard. I try to write in a way that is clear and true. But sometimes I can’t help but cover up ugly or difficult things a little bit— especially if I’m writing about things I’ve done wrong. It’s not so bad talking about the good things we do, but the bad? That’s tricky. One reason I believe the Bible is true is that the Author did not cover up the flaws and bad decisions of His people. God was honest about the failures of the men and women He hand-picked to serve Him in important
positions. He didn’t excuse their bad choices, wave away their selfishness or look the other way. He reported it, judged it, allowed the consequences of it—and forgave it. The clearest example is King David. Not only did he sleep with another man’s wife, he then killed the man to cover up his affair. Yet even though he did these terrible things, when he was confronted, David truly turned back
to God. He accepted he had done wrong and humbly asked for forgiveness. He became the standard by which future kings of Israel were judged because he “did what was right in the eyes of the Lord” (1 KINGS 15:11). God knows everyone, completely. Although facing up to the truth of
our selfishness and sin can be painful, when it’s admitted and forgiven, it can be used to turn us back to God.
OUR SIN IS GREAT;
GOD’S LOVE AND FORGIVENESS IS GREATER.
