Reach for…
Bible: Psalm 55:1-7,22
Reading
I said, “Oh, that I had the wings of a dove! I would fly away and be at rest” (V.6).
What do you do when you’re stressed? I reach for biscuits . . . or crisps or sweets or anything else I can stuff into my face! Everyone deals with stress in different ways. Some need to talk, some go quiet, some get angry, some go shopping, some go hyper, some distract themselves with their phones and some eat. Like me. Whatever we do to calm or distract ourselves, it’s never the real answer we need. In Psalm 55, King David talked about how he wanted to escape from his
difficulties: “My heart is in anguish within me . . . ‘Oh, that I had the wings of a dove! I would fly away and be at rest’ ” (PSALM 55:4,6). After his friend Ahithophel had betrayed him and gone to help his enemy, David wanted to get away (VV.12-13; SEE 2 SAMUEL 15). In this psalm he tells us that he reached out to God in his pain (PSALM 55:4-5,16). What do we reach for? One Christian writer says we should also reach out to God and honestly share our stresses with Him. She writes, “It’s alright questions, pain and stabbing anger can be poured out to the Infinite One and He will not be damaged.”
WE CAN PUT OUR STRESS INTO GOD’S HANDS
AND HE’LL GIVE US HIS PEACE.
