Drifting Away

Drifting Away

Bible: Job 1:13-22

Reading

Shall we accept good from God, and not trouble? (JOB 2:10).

Imagine relaxing on a surfboard or rubber dingy along the shore, eyes closed, soaking up the sun and listening to the gentle crash of waves. You don’t have a care in the world—until you open your eyes! Suddenly the beach is just a blur in the distance! We often drift like that in our walk with God if we’re not careful. It’s subtle yet shocking when we suddenly realise how far we’ve drifted from God. We start drifting any time that we get distracted by something that isn’t God: like really, really wanting a new gadget or video game or something like that. Life can quickly become about something else—and God is left as a blur in the distance. Think about Job and his wife. Both had plenty of reasons to be mad at God. Their children were dead, their money was lost and Job’s health destroyed. His wife told him, “Curse God and die!” But Job replied, “Shall we accept good from God, and not trouble?” (JOB 2:9-10). Job’s wife was ready to give up on God. But Job stuck close to Him, even in all the pain and loss. There are many attitudes that can set us adrift: believing that we need more than God to be happy; placing meaningful relationships above God; thinking God should live up to what we want; ignoring His correction; turning a deaf ear when the Bible is uncomfortable. If you’re beginning to drift, talk to God about it—and make sure you work out what’s distracting you, so you can set your eyes back on Him

WE MUST PAY THE MOST CAREFUL ATTENTION . . .

SO THAT WE DO NOT DRIFT AWAY. HEBREWS 2:1
