Resolutions

Bible: Lamentations 3:19-23

Reading

[His compassions] are new every morning; great is your faithfulness (V.23).

Have you ever made a resolution? We only really think about them at the start of a new year. But actually people make resolutions all the time. We might say, “I’m going to make more time for revision from now on!” if
we’ve recently flunked an exam. Or “I’m going to be a better friend!” if we’ve let someone down. One time I watched a show where celebrities were sharing their resolutions. One of them said her resolution for the year was the same as the year before and the one before that. This woman realised that decisions to live better shouldn’t be limited to one part of the year—but made as often as we need them. Jeremiah came to a similar realisation about the opportunities each new day offers. As he looked on in horror at the suffering and destruction of his homeland, “this [he called] to mind and therefore [had] hope: Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is [God’s] faithfulness” (LAMENTATIONS 3:21-23).
In the midst of his heavy sadness, Jeremiah realised that the failings and disappointment of yesterday don’t have to define today. In His great faithfulness and mercy, God gives us what we need to keep going and move
on. No matter what happened yesterday, today He can help us love, forgive and show kindness. Let’s move on from yesterday’s mistakes and live in God’s great gift of a new beginning, a new chance, a new morning in Him.

TODAY IS A FRESH GIFT FROM GOD.
