Winter Snow
Bible: Isaiah 42:1-4
Reading
He will not shout or cry out, or raise his voice in the streets. A bruised reed he will not break (VV.2-3)
In winter in my part of the world, I often wake to everything blanketed in the peace and quiet of thick, early morning snow. Unlike a spring thunderstormthat hammers at our windows throughout the night, snow comes softly. Jesus could have come to earth in power like a hurricane, but instead He came quietly and slowly like the winter snow falling softly in the night outside my window.
Jesus’ arrival took many by quiet surprise. Instead of being born in a palace, He was born in an unlikely place, a sleeping place for dirty, smelly animals. And He slept in the only bed available, a food trough (LUKE 2:7). Instead of being looked after by royalty and government officials, Jesus was welcomed by shepherds (VV.15-16).
Instead of having money and power, Jesus’ parents could only afford the ‘poor person’s’ sacrifice of two birds when they showed Him at the temple (V.24). The way Jesus entered the world was promised by God through Isaiah, who knew the coming Saviour would “not shout or cry out” (ISAIAH 42:2) nor would He come in a way that might break a damaged plant or blow out a struggling flame (V.3). Instead He came gently in order to bring us to Himself with His offer of peace with God. A peace that’s available to all who believe the amazing, but unexpected story of a Saviour born in a manger.
FOR GOD DID NOT SEND HIS SON INTO THE
WORLD TO CONDEMN THE WORLD, BUT TO
SAVE THE WORLD THROUGH HIM. JOHN 3:17
