Our Generous God
Bible: Matthew 20:1-16
Reading
Don’t I have the right to do what I want with my own money?
Or are you envious because I am generous? (V.15).
Our aeroplane home was overbooked. But we were offered a fancy hotel to stay in while we waited for another flight. We took the offer straight away; a hotel with a swimming pool sounded exciting! But later, when we heard that other passengers got the same offer and an upgrade to first class, we felt hard done by. Suddenly our delay didn’t seem so exciting. That trip home made me think of one of Jesus’ stories about God’s generosity (MATTHEW 20:1-16). A man hired people early in the morning to work for him all day.
Then he hired more workers later in the day. And did the same again and again. But the people who worked the whole day thought it was unfair that they got the same amount of pay as those who only worked an hour or two. But the man said, “Are you envious because I am generous?” (V.15). And that is the point of the story. We can either view God’s massive generosity to everyone as unfair, or we can enjoy his kind gifts and love without comparing. Instead of moaning about anything we don’t have, we can rejoice at our life in God’s family—not only for ourselves but for others. May we accept His gift of love and new life with joy, knowing that He gives freely to all.
GOD GIVES GENEROUSLY TO EVERYONE
WHO COMES TO HIM, NO MATTER WHO THEY ARE.
