Turn and Run

Turn and Run

Bible: 1 Peter 5:8-10

Reading

Resist [the devil], standing firm in the faith (V.9).

Ali was a beautiful, smart and happy teenager with loving parents. But at the end of her school years something made her try heroin. Her parents saw changes in her and sent her to rehab after Ali admitted the impact the drugs were having. After treatment, they asked what she would tell her friends about trying drugs. Her advice: “Just turn and run.” She said that “just saying no” wasn’t enough. Tragically, Ali relapsed and died of an overdose a few years later. Wanting to keep others from doing the same thing, her heartbroken parents were interviewed on a news programme. They told viewers to “run for Ali” by staying far away from people or places where they might get mixed up in drugs and other dangerous stuff. Paul told Timothy (and us) to run from evil (2 TIMOTHY 2:22), and Peter also warned, “Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith” (1 PETER 5:8-9). None of us are as strong as we think we are. Given the right (or in this case, wrong) situations, we could all give in to big temptations. The best thing to do is to steer clear of such situations where we’ll be tempted as best we can. We also need to be prepared for temptation by talking with God each day and staying close to Him. When we “[stand] firm in the faith” we will know better when to turn and run to Him
