In step with God
Bible: Psalm 1:1-6
Reading
Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked (V.1).
I’d only meant to listen to one Christian music video on YouTube, but soon I was listening to one song after another, each based on a psalm. I was uplifted through these modern-day versions, particularly one take on Psalm 1, which talks about the joy of living a life centred on God. In Psalm 1:1-2, we read, “Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord.” But this doesn’t mean we should avoid non-Christians. Jesus by His words and example showed us otherwise! Instead, this psalm points to our lifestyle, our “way” (PSALM 1:1). It reminds us that if we want to live a life that pleases God and benefits us and others, we are called to choose a different path to the self-centred lifestyles around us. We are to be God-centred. We can find this better path through spending time with God and growing closer to Him, taking “great delight in [the Bible]” and reading it “day and night” (V.2). As we do we’ll find we’re filled up, “like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season” (V.3). And by our example and the Spirit’s work in us, God can use us to show others how good life with Him really is.
SINCE WE LIVE BY THE SPIRIT, LET US
KEEP IN STEP WITH THE SPIRIT. GALATIANS 5:25
