Bible: Psalm 27

Reading

The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear? The Lord is the
stronghold of my life—of whom shall I be afraid?

We like to keep different areas of our lives separate. Church friends are different to school friends. Family are separate to youth group. Revising, after-school clubs, movie nights—they all have their time and place. And amongst it all we try to fit in our ‘spiritual’ time with God. I don’t see that separation in the Psalms. Somehow David and the other writers managed to make God the centre of their lives and all the different things they did. Everything always came back to God. To them, worship was a way of life, rather than a Sunday morning activity. The attitude of letting God in on every detail of life is one we all need.

For me, the Psalms have become a step towards realising God’s true place at the centre. The psalmists have an urgency, a need and a hunger for God that makes my own life look weak by comparison. They panted for God with their tongues hanging out, as an exhausted deer pants for water (PSALMS 42:1-2). They lay awake at night dreaming of “the beauty of the Lord” (27:4). They said, “Better is one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere (84:10). Maybe as we read the Psalms, some of their love for God will rub off on us.

WORSHIPPING GOD ISN’T AN ACTIVITY,

BUT A WAY OF LIFE.
