A Hand up
Bible: Ecclesiastes 4:8-12
Reading
If either of them falls down, one can help the other up (V.10).
When I was very little, I sometimes got to enjoy an ice-skating rink in our back garden during cold winters (when our pond froze over!). Learning to skate was hard! My parents had to convince me to take small steps onto the icy surface . . . I knew that falling over would hurt. A lot. Every time I slipped, my dad would reach out and hold me steady until I found my footing again. Having someone there to help us up when we fall is what Ecclesiastes 4:8-12 is all about. Doing things with someone else makes everything much better (ECCLESIASTES 4:9).
Friends make everything easier to go through. When we come up against big problems, it helps to have someone else to rely on. These relationships can give us strength, purpose and comfort. When we find ourselves flattened on life’s ice rink, is there a helping hand nearby? If so, it might be from God. Or when someone else needs a friend, could we be God’s answer to lift them up? When we make ourselves a friend to someone, we often find them to be a friend to us. And even when we feel on our own with stuff, we can remember that God is our everpresent help (PSALM 46:1). As we talk to Him, He’ll steady us with His firm grip.
GOD’S HELPING HAND IS NEVER FAR AWAY.
