From nothing

From nothing

Bible: Genesis 1:1-13

Reading

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth (V.1).

Nothing. Absolutely nothing. No light. No sky. No land. It’s impossible to really get our heads around the complete nothingness that existed before Genesis 1:1. Then suddenly, through His words, God filled nothingness with “the heavens and the earth”. God reached through the emptiness and made a place, a world, a universe. Through all three Persons of the Godhead—God the Father (GENESIS 1:1), the Spirit (V.2) and Son (JOHN 1:1,14; COLOSSIANS 1:15-16)— nothing became something. History began. The first verse of Genesis gives us so much to think about. We could reflect on the words “In the beginning God . . .” for the rest of our lives and still find more to think about! Just as today we would have no life, no breath, no existence without the Father, Son and Spirit, neither would we have the universe without God’s full and mighty power at the moment of creation. In awe we may wonder what went on before “the beginning”. Well, we’re told in Ephesians that before anything else happened—before there was ‘something’—“[God] chose us in [Jesus] before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight” (EPHESIANS 1:4). Even while there was still nothing, God knew He wanted you in His family, and planned a secure way to make you His own: through Jesus and “the promised Holy Spirit” (V.14).

EVEN WHEN THERE WAS NOTHING,

YOU WERE ON GOD’S MIND.
