Remember me
Bible: Luke 23:39-43
Reading
Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom” (V.42).
Matthew Henshaw got his name into the Guinness Book of World Records in an unusual way. After swallowing a 15.9 inch sword (ow!), he attached an 18 kilo sack of potatoes to the handle of the sword and held it for five seconds (don’t try this at home!). Matthew Henshaw and other guys like him have gone to extreme lengths to have their names listed in the world’s most famous record book. The need to be remembered in some way can make us all act in strange and amazing ways. But the ‘remembrance’ Jesus offers us has nothing to do with anything we do. In fact, after giving His friends the authority to do amazing things
(LUKE 10:17-19), Jesus said, “Do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven” (V.20). When Jesus hung on the cross, a thief (also being executed) trusted Jesus just in time (LUKE 23:40-42). He understood that unending life had nothing to do with what he had done—good or bad. It was all about what Jesus was doing—giving His own life so that even the worst of the worst could be welcomed into heaven by God. The important thing is being remembered by God, not by anyone else.
