Why pray?
Bible: Luke 11 : 1-13
Reading
After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to
pray. Later that night, he was there alone (MATTHEW 14:23).
If you could invite anyone in the world over to your house, who would make the list? Popstars? Footballers? World leaders? But imagine how you would actually feel if they turned up! You’d probably be nervous to say the least! Would you be brave enough to even speak?
When we pray, we’re talking to Someone much bigger, more powerful and far more important than anyone on earth. We’re talking to the God who made it all, including us. In a way, if we were to feel nervous with a famous
person, shouldn’t we feel even more impressed when we talk to God? And not only can we talk to Him; He listens to every single word, with His full attention. Isn’t that amazing?!
The Bible sometimes teaches us about how big God is compared to us. While this is clearly true, Jesus taught us about the closeness we have with God, even though we are so small. In His own prayers He used the word
Abba (which means “Daddy”) to talk with His Father (MARK 14:36). Jesus understood better than anyone the difference between God and us. Yet He did not question God’s personal love for each of us. He watches
over every detail of our world and counts the hairs on our heads. Jesus valued talking to His Father enough to spend many hours with Him. If I had to answer the question “Why pray?” in one sentence, it would be, “Because Jesus did.”
IF JESUS NEEDED TO PRAY, HOW CAN WE DO LESS?
