MEGAN’S GLOVES

MEGAN’S GLOVES

Bible: James 1:19-27

Reading

My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me (JOHN 10:27).

When Megan was in her first year of secondary school, she kept coming home from school without her winter gloves. It drove her mum crazy because she had to keep buying new ones, which the family couldn’t afford.
One day her mum got really cross and said, “Megan, you’ve got to be more careful. This can’t go on!”

Megan began to cry. Through her tears she told her mum that as long as she kept getting new gloves, she could give hers away to kids who didn’t have any. Now she’s eighteen and Megan’s hobbies include volunteering in the local community centre and looking out for the young kids who drop in. She said that it “felt like that was the kind of thing I was supposed to be doing”.

As Christians, we are also meant to have this kind of caring attitude towards others. James tells us to listen to the Bible and do what it says (JAMES 1:22-23). But he doesn’t stop with just telling us to obey. He gives us
specific instructions about what we must do. Then he gives us a practical example of how we can give: “Visit orphans and widows in their trouble” (V.27). It’s all about looking out for those who are in real need. How can you be a Megan to someone today? It’s what we’re “supposed to be doing”.
