Communion On The Moon

Communion On The Moon

Bible: Psalm 139:1-12

Reading

If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there (V.8).

Apollo 11 landed on the moon on Sunday, 20 July 1969. Many of us know Armstrong’s historic statement as he stepped onto the moon’s surface: “That’s one small step for a man; one giant leap for mankind.” But not so many know about the first meal eaten there. Buzz Aldrin had brought aboard the spacecraft a tiny communion kit provided by his church. He sent a radio broadcast to earth asking listeners to think about the big events of that day and to give thanks.

Then Buzz Aldrin poured wine into a cup. He read, “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit” (JOHN 15:5). Silently, he gave thanks, taking a piece of the bread and a sip of the wine.

God is everywhere. In Psalm 139 we are told that wherever we go, God is right there with us. Buzz Aldrin even celebrated that on the moon by having communion there. Thousands of miles from earth, he took time to remember Jesus’ sacrifice to save him and make him God’s child—no matter where he ended up.

Do you feel out of place at the moment? Are you in a new school or home? Do you feel as if you’re a bit lost? No matter what your situation, God’s right here with you.

THERE’S NOWHERE YOU CAN GO THAT GOD ISN’T.
