Tired of Caring
Bible: Matthew 9:35-38
Reading
When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were
harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd (V.36).
Anne Frank is well known for her diary describing her family’s years of hiding during World War II. When she was later imprisoned in a Nazi death camp, those with her said “her tears never ran dry”, making her “[an encouraging] presence for all who knew her.” Because of this, I’ve heard people today say that Anne Frank never got tired of caring.
We can all get tired of caring for others in this badly broken world. The huge amount of suffering around the world and in our own lives can start to numb us to the pain others may be feeling. But Jesus never got tired of caring.
Matthew 9:35-36 says, “Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.”
Our world suffers in many ways. People hurt each other; and many are lost without their God. Jesus came to meet every need and challenged His followers to join Him in this work (MATTHEW 9:37-38). He prayed that the Father would help us to meet needs all around us—people who struggle with loneliness, messy lives and illness. May the Father give us the energy and strength to keep caring for the people we meet with the love He has shown us.
