Bible: Acts 9:26-31
Reading

But Barnabas took [Saul] and brought him to the apostles (V.27).

Have you ever seen the movie The King’s Speech? It’s the story of King George VI, who became king when his brother abandoned the throne. With the United Kingdom on the brink of World War II, officials wanted a well-spoken leader because of the important role of radio in people’s lives. King George VI, however, had a stutter

I loved the character of George’s wife, Elizabeth, in the film. Throughout George’s struggle to overcome his stutter, she was always there, encouraging him. Her love was the support he needed to overcome his challenge and rule well during the war.

The Bible also highlights stories of encouragers who supported people during challenging times. Aaron and Hur supported Moses during Israel’s battles (EXODUS 17:8-16). Elizabeth encouraged her pregnant relative Mary (LUKE 1:42-45).

After giving his life to Jesus, Paul needed the support of Barnabas, whose name literally means “son of encouragement”. When the early church was afraid of Paul (because of his violent past), Barnabas, at the risk of his own reputation, spoke up for him (ACTS 9:27). His words led to Paul being welcomed by the Christians. Barnabas later served as Paul’s travelling and preaching partner (ACTS 14). Despite the dangers, they worked together to share the good news about Jesus.

Jesus’ followers are still called to “encourage one another and build each other up” (1 THESSALONIANS 5:11). May we always be looking to offer encouragement to others, especially when they face difficult times.

THE ENCOURAGEMENT OF A FRIEND CAN MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE.
