Blue Lines
Bible: Proverbs 4:10-27
Reading
I instruct you in the way of wisdom and lead you along straight paths (V.11).
Downhill skiing racecourses are often marked by lots of blue paint sprayed across the white, snowy surface. The paint might be a distraction for spectators, but it is vital to both the success and safety of the racers. The paint is a guide for the skiers to see the fastest line to the bottom of the hill. Also the bright paint against the snow helps the racers judge depth and distance, keeping them safe while travelling at such fast speeds.
Solomon begs us to look for wisdom in the hope of keeping us safe on the racecourse of life. Like the blue lines, wisdom, he says, will “lead [us] along straight paths” and keep us from crashing (PROVERBS 4:11-12). He wants his readers to enjoy a rich, satisfying life, free from the damaging effects of living apart from God’s ways and love.
God, as our loving Father, offers us ‘blue line’ guidance in the Bible. While He’s given us the freedom to ‘ski’ wherever we like, the boundaries and limits He teaches us (like racecourse markers) are “life to those who find them” (V.22). When we turn from our own way and walk instead with Him, our path will be lit with His love, guiding us each day and keeping us from crashing out of the race (VV.12,18).
RACING SAFELY WITH GOD MEANS STAYING WITHIN THE LINES HE DRAWS.
