Too Tired
Bible: Galatians 6:2-10
Reading
Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up (V.9).
Do you ever get tired? I’m not just talking about wanting to chill after a long day at school. I’m talking about weariness, that feeling that no matter how much you do, there’s always more to be done. Homework piles up, friends are demanding, family arguments won’t die down—sometimes it feels like there’s no let up. I get fed up when life gets like this. Selfish. Even a bit moany.
Paul knew something about this kind of tiredness. In Galatians he warns against the temptation to throw in the towel—in big ways or small—when it’s all too much. He tells us, “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up” (V.9).
So how do we keep from letting tiredness wear us down? The verses around verse 9 offer important clues. Paul challenges us to live our lives as servants (V.2), with humility (VV.3-5), generosity (V.6), obedience to God’s Spirit (VV.7-8) and good actions (V.10). Living in these ways doesn’t mean we’ll magically be able to just keep going through our tiredness. But when we live the kind of life “to please the Spirit” (V.8), our focus will be on helping others, which is actually much more energising that just serving ourselves. As we look to God and love His people, we’ll move forward in God’s strength, not our own.
