Speak Life

Speak Life

Bible: Psalm 33:4-9
Reading

The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit (PROVERBS 18:21).

The comic-book universe created by Marvel Comics includes a character whose superpower is a catastrophically destructive voice. The tiniest sound made by Black Bolt can destroy an entire city. With a voice that can spell death, Black Bolt learns to maintain absolute silence in order to look after his people

We, however, are looked after by a King whose voice brings life and whose words do not destroy, but spoke the world into existence. “By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, their starry host by the breath of his mouth … He spoke and it came to be; he commanded and it stood firm” (PSALM 33:6,9). As human beings created in the very image of this King (GENESIS 1:26-27), our words also carry great power for good or bad. “The tongue has the power of life and death,” say the Proverbs, “and those who love it will eat its fruit [bearing the consequences of what they say]” (PROVERBS 18:21).

We have a choice to use the power of our words to bring others sadness and hurt, or love and life. May we choose to speak life to our classmates, family and friends. Let’s use our words to reveal our King.
