Never Alone
Bible: Psalm 25:16-22
Reading
Turn to me and be gracious to me, for I am lonely and afflicted (V.16).
Although I was surrounded by thousands of people at a large conference, I was sitting at the end of the row, with no one next to me. When the speaker asked us to turn to our neighbour to talk about a question, I had no one to talk to. I was in a crowd, but I felt totally alone.
That evening stands out in my memory because it reminds me of how much we all need connections with others: to feel needed and like we belong. After all, God created us for relationships with others and Himself. Although people may overlook us, He never will.
David poured out his feelings of loneliness and despair to God in Psalm 25: “Relieve the troubles of my heart and free me from my anguish” (PSALM 25:17). He looked for refuge in God (V.20) as he put his hope in Him (V.21). Perhaps to remind himself to trust in God, David wrote this psalm in a format he could memorise easily: he began each new line with the next letter in the Hebrew alphabet.
When we feel overcome with loneliness, we too can turn to God for love and peace. We can read the Psalms (like today’s reading) to remind us that God will never abandon us or leave us alone. He’ll always comfort us because He delights in us. With Him, we’re never alone.
GOD WILL NEVER ABANDON HIS CHILDREN.
