Slapton Sands

Slapton Sands

Bible: 1 Peter 5:1-11
Reading

Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour (V.8).

Slapton Sands makes up part of the southern shores running through Devon. But this brilliant beach area carries a terrible memory from its past.

On 28 April 1944, during World War II, some soldiers were part of Operation Tiger, a training exercise in beach landings, preparing them for the D-Day invasion of Normandy. Suddenly, enemy gunboats turned up and killed over 700 soldiers in a surprise attack. Today, a monument stands on Slapton Sands to remember the sacrifice of those young men who died. They were training for battle, but never made it to the real thing

This terrible event is a challenging example of what it is like for us as Christians. We also have an enemy who’s powerful and sneaky. That is why Peter warned: “Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour” (1 PETER 5:8).

Like the soldiers on Slapton Sands, we face an enemy who wants to bring us down and drag us away from our heavenly Father. As we walk with Jesus, we must be on the alert. The devil can throw anything in front of us to distract or upset us. We have to be ready for surprise attacks. We cannot make the mistake of thinking that following Jesus will always be easy. Instead we need to cling to Him, every day, like soldiers keeping their focus on their “commanding officer” (2 TIMOTHY 2:3-4). He alone is our safety .

THE DEVIL’S ATTACKS ARE NO MATCH FOR JESUS’ POWER.
