Is That You?

Is That You?

Bible: Luke 6:27-36
Reading

He asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbour?” (LUKE 10:29).

A man sailing in the Caribbean, 4,000 miles from home, lost his mast in a storm. He had been adrift for two days, and huge waves were filling his boat, when his desperate SOS was picked up. Ninety minutes later he was rescued by the captain of a massive superliner.

Only when he was pulled out of the water did the sailor discover that the captain who had rescued him was a neighbour from his village. The rescued man later asked, “What are the chances of being rescued in the middle of nowhere by a guy from your neighbourhood?”

Jesus saw neighbours in unlikely places. When an expert in Jewish law asked Him to define the “neighbour” we are to love (LUKE 10:29), Jesus drew a big circle. He told the story of a Samaritan (the Jews and Samaritans hated each other) to show that according to the Bible, a neighbour is the friend, stranger or enemy who needs the help we can give (LUKE 10).

As Jesus’ people, we need to be ready to show kindness even to those who hurt us (LUKE 6:32-34). Only then will we show Jesus’ love to the world around us. After all, that’s the kind of love He gave us: while we were still His enemies, Jesus paid the ultimate price to come to our rescue.

WE START TO LIVE OUT JESUS’ LOVE WHEN WE REALISE OUR NEIGHBOURS ARE EVERYWHERE WE GO.
