That’s Awesome

Bible: Psalm 66:1-12

Come and see what God has done, his awesome deeds for mankind! (V.5).

We all use the word “awesome”. Movies can be “awesome”. Books can be “awesome”. Even people can be “awesome” …

But if we call everyday stuff awesome and then call God awesome, we forget how truly awesome He is. Someone I know has a rule she tries to follow—the word awesome is to be used only for God.

It’s no small thing to forget how big God is. He is far more than a friend who will look out for us or a cash machine to churn out stuff just as we need. Until we are stunned by the awesomeness of God, we will be way too impressed with ourselves and lose the awe of belonging to an awesome God.

A look at the Psalms puts it all in perspective. One psalmist wrote, “For the Lord Most High is awesome, the great King over all the earth” (PSALM 47:2). And another psalm says: “Say to God, ‘How awesome are your deeds!’ … Come and see what God has done, his awesome deeds for mankind!” (PSALM 66:3,5).

What could be more awesome than the love that made Jesus go to the cross for us? Put Him in His proper place as the only One who is truly awesome, and praise God for His awesome work in your life!
