Bible: John 4:4-15

Whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst (V.14).

In January 2018, a French supermarket chain unexpectedly slashed the price of Nutella by 70%. Immediately, riots broke out in all the stores as customers snatched as many jars as they could carry. One manager resorted to handing out one per person, with a security guard looming over the crowd. I’m a fan of Nutella, so I understand (have you ever dipped a marshmallow in Nutella? Amazing!). Of course, the sale came to an end—and all the fought-over Nutella jars soon became empty.

Jesus, however, offered something to a Samaritan woman that He promised would never run out. The conversation happened at a well, and Jesus boldly said that he could give her something more satisfying than the water she could scoop from the ground. “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again,” Jesus said, “but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst” (JOHN 4:13-14). Stunned by what He said, the woman asked for this water, and a life-changing conversation followed (read the full story; it’s so worth it).

Jesus’ offer to the woman is the same offer to all of us. God’s love, welcome and healing can satisfy our deepest hungers and needs. With God, we have all we will ever need.
