What Simon Said

What Simon Said

Bible: Luke 5:1-11

Simon answered … “But because you say so, I will let down the nets” (V.5).

A man named Refuge Rabindranath has been a youth worker in Sri Lanka for more than ten years. He often stays out with the teenagers there late into the night—hanging out with them, listening to them, giving them advice and teaching them. He enjoys working amongst teenagers, but he finds it really hard when some of them decide they’re not interested in hearing about Jesus any more. Some days he feels a bit like Simon Peter in Luke 5.

Simon had been working hard all night but caught no fish (V.5). He felt fed up and tired. Yet when Jesus told him to “put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch” (V.4), Simon replied, “Because you say so, I will let down the nets” (V.5).

Simon’s trust in Jesus, who he’d only just met, was amazing. As an experienced fisherman, he knew that fish move to the bottom of the lake when the sun is up. So the nets they used could not go deep enough to catch them. His willingness to trust Jesus, even though it made no sense, was rewarded. Not only did Simon catch a large number of fish, he got to see much more of who Jesus is. He moved from calling Jesus “Master” (V.5) to calling Him “Lord” (V.8). In fact listening to God like this often means we see more of Him at work, allowing us to get to know Him better. Maybe today God is telling you to “let down your nets again” and trust Him with something or someone. May we answer as Simon did: “Because You say so, I will.”

To Pray About…

Father, it is amazing that You want us to trust You and call You “Lord”. Please help us to obey You today and to walk closely with You.

TRUSTING GOD WILL GUIDE US THROUGH THE HARD TIMES AND BRING US CLOSER TO HIM.
