Reason to Sing

Bible: Psalm 98

Sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvellous things (V.1).

When I was thirteen, my school made us take four ‘life skills’ courses: cooking, art, choir and woodworking. On my first day in choir, the instructor called us one at a time to the piano to hear our voices and place us by our vocal range. During my turn at the piano, I sang the notes she
played many times, but wasn’t told to go anywhere in the class. Instead, after repeated tries, she sent me to the school admin office to find a different class to take. I was crushed. I felt like I shouldn’t sing at all.

I carried that thought with me for several years until I read Psalm 98. The writer opens with an invitation to “sing to the Lord” (PS. 98:1). The reason has nothing to do with how well we can sing; He loves all His children’s songs of thanksgiving and praise. We are invited to sing because God “has done marvellous things” (V.1).

The psalm writer points out two great reasons to joyfully praise God: God has saved us and He has promised to never leave us. In God’s choir, we each have a place to sing of the incredible things He has done.

What I’m thankful for . . .

Father, You have done great things in my life. Even if my voice isn’t one for the stage, I want to join the choir in thanking You for the amazing things You’ve done.
