Fair Play

Fair Play

Bible: Titus 2:7-14

In everything set them an example by doing what is good (V.7).

When Singaporean runner Ashley Liew found himself at the head of the pack during a marathon, he knew something was wrong. He quickly realised that the lead runners had taken a wrong turn and were now well behind him. Ashley could have made the most of their mistake, but he knew it would not be a ‘real’ victory. He wanted to win because he was faster— not because those ahead of him had made a mistake. So he slowed down to let them catch up.

In the end, Ashley lost the race and missed out on a medal. But he won the crowd over—and got an international award for his act of fair play. It was a fantastic display of his faith as a Christian. No doubt some people will have been left asking: “What made him do that?” Hopefully, they would see that Ashley’s life with Jesus was the answer.

Ashley’s act challenges me to share my faith through my actions as well. Little acts of thoughtfulness, kindness or forgiveness can make God known to the people around us. As Paul put it simply, “Show integrity, seriousness and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned”
(TITUS 2:7-8).

Being kind to others can show the world that we are able to live differently because of the Holy Spirit’s work in us. He will give us the strength to avoid living selfishly and to live lives that point people to God instead (VV.11-12).

To Pray About…

Father, may our lives today make others want to ask us why we are different. Help us to follow Your Holy Spirit’s leading.

LIVE SO THAT OTHERS WILL WANT TO KNOW JESUS.
