The Boat

The Boat

Bible: Acts 6:1-7

Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others (1 PETER 4:10).

A group of teenagers were visiting a church in Jamaica to take part in the work they were doing there. One afternoon they were chilling out and playing a game of Ultimate Frisbee. But when one of them spotted a boat had overturned off a nearby beach, the game ended and they rushed to the water to help.

There they found a small group of professional sailors struggling with their boat—trying to turn it upright. That’s where those young people could help. They waded in, put their shoulders against the boat and together flipped it back over.

What happened that day reminds me of what can happen in the church. The ‘professionals’, the church leaders and others who are trained to preach and teach, face a job they can’t do alone. It’s often a struggle to get the work of the church done until the rest of us, no matter how young
we might be, join in and work with them. This was the situation in Acts 6. Some people in the church were being forgotten, and the church leaders realised they couldn’t do everything by
themselves. Only when seven others stepped in to help could the work of the church keep going.
How can you help your church leaders or youth pastor? What can you be doing to serve in your church?
