Open My Eyes
Bible: John 14:23-31
The Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things (V.26).
When I was on holiday in Turkey, I went to the historical Chora Church in Istanbul. There was lots of amazing artwork showing different Bible stories and characters. But I couldn’t figure out what most of them were meant to be. But then I went another time with a guide—and it all started to make sense!
Reading the Bible can be a bit like that. We get the idea of the basic stories, but struggle to work out what they really mean, how they fit together or what they have to do with us. We may have books to explain the Bible, but we also need a guide—someone to open our eyes and help us see
the real depth and meaning of the Bible’s words. Our guide is the Holy Spirit who teaches us “all things” (JOHN 14:26). Paul wrote that He explains “spiritual realities with Spirit-taught words” (1 COR. 2:13).
It’s amazing that we have the Author of the Bible to show us what it all means! God has not only given us His written Word, but He also helps us to understand it and learn from it. So let us pray with the psalm writer, saying, “Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law” (PS. 119:18).
WE NEED GOD TO HELP US UNDERSTAND HIS WORDS.
