Humility

Humility

Bible: Philippians 2:1-11

The greatest among you will be your servant (MATTHEW 23:11).

If you had to write down a list of things you wanted to be better at, what would it include? Sport? Maths? Making friends? How about humility? It’s probably not the first thing we think of. But, as Christians, we should want to grow in humility because that’s how Jesus lived. Jesus shows us the perfect example of humility. The Bible tells us, “In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant” (PHIL. 2:5-7).

Jesus showed the greatest humility of all. Even though He is God, and everything is His, He chose to give it all up for us. He chose to go to the cross so that through His death He might “lift [us] up” into new life when we humbly trust Him (1 PET. 5:5-7).

We copy Jesus’ humility when we want to live for our heavenly Father rather than ourselves. Jesus’ kindness helps us see how good it is to look out for the needs of others. Aiming for humility isn’t easy in our ‘me first’ world. But as we find our security in Jesus’ love, He will give us everything we need to follow Him.
