A Blind Man’s Prayer

Bible: Luke 18:35-43

Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me! (V.38).

A couple of years ago a friend noticed I was struggling to see anything that wasn’t close to me. What he did next was simple, but changed my life forever. He took off his glasses and said, “Try these.” When I put his glasses on, my blurred vision cleared up. Finally I went to an optician who gave me my own glasses to sort my vision out.

Today’s reading in Luke 18 is about a blind man. Living in total darkness had forced him to beg for a living. News about Jesus, the popular teacher and healer, had reached the blind beggar’s ears. So when Jesus came near where he was sitting, he began to hope. “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” (V.38) he shouted. Even though he couldn’t see with his eyes, the man could ‘see’ Jesus’ real identity and trusted Him to meet his need. Driven by this confidence in Jesus, “He shouted all the more, ‘Son of David, have mercy on me!’ ” (V.39). The result? Jesus took away his blindness, and he went from begging for his living to thanking God because he could see (V.43).

In times of your own ‘darkness’, where do you turn? Who do you talk to? Glasses can help our eyes see better, but only Jesus can give us the spiritual sight to ‘see’ and know Him.

Father, help me to clearly see who Jesus is and what He can do.
