Hold On

Hold On

Bible: Philippians 2:1-11

[Jesus], though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped (V.6 ESV)

I remember going to a big theme park when it first opened. The rides all looked massive! I waited with a group of friends to have a go on the biggest rollercoaster there. But as soon as we got on it and it started moving, I wished I hadn’t! I’m not sure I opened my eyes even once. By the time it stopped, my hands were white from gripping the handrail so tightly. A friend had to help me peel them off and rub feeling back into them!

That rollercoaster ride reminds me of what it can be like to hold on to something in our lives too tightly. We all have things we ‘cling’ to. Like our dreams, our friends, our school trophies, our boyfriend or girlfriend. Learning to ‘let go’ so that we can hold on to God first can be really hard. And often we need other Christians to help us see where we’re holding on to things in our lives too tightly. I’m thankful for the example of Jesus who didn’t hold tightly to His rightful, heavenly throne. Being fully God, Jesus was still willing to let go of His place in heaven so He could come to earth and die on the cross for us (PHIL. 2:6,8).

Jesus didn’t keep a white-knuckled grip on His rightful place in heaven. His focus was on rescuing us and making us part of God’s family again. When we are holding too tightly to anything that isn’t Him, we can follow His example and let go. When He comes first in our lives, we will find we have everything we need.

JESUS LET GO OF HEAVEN TO TAKE HOLD OF US.
