Leviathan

Leviathan

Bible: Job 41:12-34

Here is the ocean, vast and wide … and Leviathan, which you made to play in the sea (PSALM 104:25-26 NLT)

One deep-sea explorer said, “When you go to the deep sea, every time you take a sample, you’ll find a new species.” In fact, in a recent year, scientists found 1,451 new types of undersea life. We simply don’t know the half of what’s out there!

In Job 38, God talked about all He had made as a lesson for Job. In three chapters, God highlighted the power of the weather, the size of the universe and the amazing creatures throughout the earth. These are things we can see for ourselves. Then God talked about the strange Leviathan—for an entire chapter. Leviathan is a creature like no other, with thick armour
(JOB 41:7,13), unbeatable power (V.12) and “fearsome teeth” (V.14). “Flames stream from its mouth … smoke pours from its nostrils” (VV.19-20). “Nothing on earth is its equal” (V.33).

Okay, so God talks about a huge creature we haven’t seen. Is that the point of Job 41?

No! Job 41 increases our understanding of God’s character. One psalm writer built on this when he wrote, “Here is the ocean, vast and wide … and Leviathan, which you made to play in the sea” (PS. 104:25-26 NLT). After the scary description in Job, we learn that God created a ‘playpen’ for this frightening animal. Leviathan was made to “play” in the sea. We still haven’t found out everything there is to know about this earth or the universe. Imagine how much there is to know about the God who made it all!
