Interrupted Relationship
Bible: Matthew 27:32-50
My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? (V.46).
The quiet, dark afternoon was interrupted by a loud cry. I imagine it drowning out the sound of sobbing from the friends and family at Jesus’ feet. It must have been much louder than the groans of the dying criminals who hung on the crosses on either side of Him.
“Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” Jesus cried out in pain as He hung on His cross (MATT. 27:46). “My God,” He said, “my God, why have you forsaken me?” Since before the world began, Jesus had enjoyed a perfect relationship with God the Father. Together they had created the universe, made us in their image and planned to save us. They had always been in perfect relationship with each other.
And now, as the agony of the cross continued to bring pain to Jesus— He, for the first time, lost the awareness of that relationship with God as He took on Himself our sin and its punishment.
It was the only way. Only through this time of interruption to their perfect relationship could we be saved. And it was only because Jesus was willing to go through the Father’s rejection at the cross that we can have our own relationship with Him. Thank You, Jesus, for going through such pain so we could be forgiven.
What I am Thankful about…
Jesus, we are amazed at Your sacrifice. We kneel before You with thanks because of what You did for us on the cross. Thank You for making us part of God’s family forever.
THE CROSS SHOWS HOW MUCH JESUS LOVES US.
