Up A Tree
Bible: Jonah 2:1-10
In my distress I called to the Lord, and he answered me (V.2).
My mum found my kitten Velvet on the kitchen side, eating her homemade cake. With an annoyed huff, she scooted her out the door. Hours later, we searched our garden for the missing cat without success. A faint meow whistled on the wind, and I looked up to the top of our tree where a black smudge sat in a branch.
In her hurry to run away from my mum, Velvet chose a more dangerous place to sit. Is it possible that we sometimes do something similar—getting ourselves into even more trouble by running from our mistakes? Even then, God comes to our rescue.
Jonah ran away from God when He told him to speak to Nineveh—and was swallowed up by a great fish. “From inside the fish Jonah prayed to the Lord his God. He said: ‘In my distress I called to the Lord, and he answered me’ ” (JNH. 2:1-2). God heard Jonah’s prayer and “commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land” (V.10). Then God gave Jonah another chance (3:1). Once we’d run out of ideas to get Velvet down, we called the local firemen. After opening up their longest ladder, a kind man climbed high, grabbed my kitten from the branch and put her safely in my arms. There are no heights—or depths—that God won’t reach to rescue us!
