Fresh in Our Minds

Fresh in Our Minds

Bible: Deuteronomy 6:1-9

Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads (V.8).

Reading

I remember my walk to school each morning gave me the chance to try and memorise some verses from the Bible—if I put in the effort. When I took that time to turn over the Bible’s words in my mind, I often found them coming back to me later in the day, giving me comfort and help for whatever was going on.

Just before the Israelites were going to enter the Promised Land, Moses told them to hold on to God’s commands and ways (DEUT. 6:1-2). Wanting them to do well, he said they should turn these instructions over in their minds and talk about them with their children (VV.6-7). He even said to tie them to their wrists and “bind them to [their] foreheads” (V.8). He didn’t want them to forget to live for God first, loving Him and enjoying being with Him. How might you spend time thinking over God’s words today? One idea is to write out a verse from the Bible, and every time you wash your hands or take a drink, read the words and take a moment to think about what they say. Or before you go to sleep, read a short passage from the Bible as the last thing you do. There are lots of ways of keeping the Bible fresh in our minds!

But when he comes to talk to God about it all, his point of view totally changes (VV.16-17). He remembers that God will deal with the world, its problems and every person perfectly. And, more importantly, he remembers how good it is to be with God (V.28). When we’re confused or fed up because classmates are being unkind or things keep going wrong, we can copy Asaph. We can talk to God and find our focus changed by the truth that His ways are best—even when we don’t understand them. Our point of view can change, even if our problems stay the same.

What I’m thankful for…

God, thank You for giving us the Bible, which gives us all the words we need to live well. Help us to read and think about it today.
