Sleepless Nights
I will praise the Lord, who counsels me; even at night my heart instructs me (V.7).
Ephesians 1:15-23
Reading
The psalmist David had his dark, lonely nights when everything seemed out of control. Doubts and fears attacked him, and there was no escape from his problems. He tossed and turned just as we do, but then he turned to his Shepherd (PS. 23:1) and reminded himself that God was with him. That brought peace in the middle of his stress. David said, “With him at my right hand, I shall not be shaken” (16:8).
We too can have sleepless nights when our stresses and worries take up all our head space. We want to sleep, but we just can’t turn our minds off! We can remember, like David did, that God is with us. Sometimes at night, when there are no distractions, we might hear God’s voice as we talk to Him about our worries. We can put our problems on Him and think about His promises to us in the Bible. We can talk to God about every single thing, passing our stress to Him (1 PET. 5:7). We can talk about our mistakes, our fights, our school problems, our anxieties, our anger—all the things that stress us out and make the nights sleepless—and listen to what He has to say. That’s what can set us apart from people who don’t know God. That’s the secret of real rest.
WHEN YOU CAN’T SLEEP, DON’T COUNT SHEEP. TALK TO THE SHEPHERD!
