God Speaks

God Speaks

Will the one who contends with the Almighty correct him? (JOB 40:2).

 Job 38:1-11
Reading

Job suffered. A lot. He lost everything (JOB 1:13-22). While his suffering never made him doubt God was real, it made him doubt if he could really trust God.

Job wanted one thing above anything else: God to turn up and explain what was going on. He wanted to meet God Himself, face to face. In the end Job got what he wanted. God showed up in person (38:1). He timed His entrance perfectly—just as Job’s friend Elihu was explaining why Job had no right to expect a visit from God.

No one—not Job or any of his friends—was prepared for what God had to say. Job had saved up a long list of questions, but it was God, not Job, who asked the questions. “Brace yourself like a man,” He begins. “I will question you, and you shall answer me” (V.3). Brushing aside thirty-five chapters’ worth of discussion on the problem of pain, God dives into an amazing poem on the incredible world He has created.

God’s words show the massive difference between the God of all creation and one little man like Job. When He speaks, He already instantly answers Job’s biggest question: is God listening to me? Job can only say, “Surely I spoke of things I did not understand, things too wonderful for me to know” (42:3).

To pray about . . .

Father, we have so many questions about life and its unfairness. But You have shown Yourself to be good. Help us to trust You for what we can’t understand.

NO PAIN OR PROBLEM IS OUTSIDE OF GOD’S CONTROL.
