Let Freedom Reign
“Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (v.32)

As we celebrate our Independence Day today, I thank God for our freedom to live as independent citizens. Yes, there are innumerable things that need to be set right in our country and yet, to wake up in a free country where we aren’t slaves or second-class citizens is a blessing that perhaps we need to appreciate more often.
The freedom that we experience as free Indians, is superseded by the greater everlasting freedom we experience as citizens of God’s kingdom. Freedom that has been made accessible to us by Christ who died in our place. Freedom to stand before God the Father, with boldness and confidence to receive mercy and find grace in our time of need. Freedom to no longer be a slave to sin, but to be called the ‘children of God.’ The freedom that comes from the truth of God’s Word.
As Rabindranath Tagore wrote, ‘Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high …into that heaven of freedom, my Father, let my country awake.’ Tagore may have written it in a different context, but it resonates with the truth of the freedom that we wake up to everyday. We are redeemed and we are His.
A Prayer for the Nation…
Father, may my countrymen experience the freedom and truth that comes from knowing you in all your resurrected power.
