What is Faith?

Love Posts

Faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see (V.1).

 Hebrews 11:1-6

When I was in my teens, I sometimes wondered if my faith in Jesus was real. I had decided to trust in Jesus Christ, but the comments my friends made and the suffering I saw in the world made me doubt it all. I wasn’t brave enough to tell anyone how I felt. In my uncertainty, I kept on ‘recommitting’ to Jesus, but was never sure if I really belonged to God or not.

I hear many Christians say they don’t really get what faith is. They think the description of it in Hebrews 11:1 means it is total certainty—which is something they don’t always have.

But when you look at where these words are in the Bible, the verse explains both what faith is and what it does. It talks about our confidence growing as we continue to trust Jesus and the Bible. As we do, we become certain of the reality of God and the place in heaven that awaits us.

If you want to see what faith looks like, why not talk to some of the older people in your church, who have continued to trust God throughout their lives, even in the disappointments and pains. They will tell you that Jesus has become so real and important to them that they are absolutely sure of Him and the truth of His promises.

Don’t let times of doubt throw you off course. Keep trusting and following Jesus and the Bible. As you do, your confidence will grow.

OUR CONFIDENCE IN JESUS WILL GROW AS WE GET TO KNOW HIM BETTER AND SEE HIM AT WORK IN OUR LIVES.
